I read and post the I Have a Dream Speech every year on Dr. MLK Jr. Day for nearly two decades. It’s a day I listen, learn, embody, and immerse myself in marinading, meditating, and serenading Dr. King’s vision, ideas, and actions. Every year — this speech teaches me something new. This year, I took a different approach, listening to his daughter Bernice King’s fervent request for anyone who dares to quote Dr. King to center his ideas and actions — not to forget his work's transformational and radical nature. This year, I saw the message of economic justice more clearly than ever before in his speech. I was so focused on civil liberties the past few years (as was the world), I am now honing in on what he really wanted to get done — providing jobs and generational wealth and opportunity for Black Americans in partnership with poor Whites.
